15 Crazy Florida Laws: Open Door Policy

The internet is full of listings of crazy and dumb laws. Our Miami criminal attorneys have seen some crazy legal situations, and we are posting a series about crazy laws attributed to Florida.
Keep in mind that the listings on the internet are questionable, and not written by attorneys or people knowledgeable about the law. A lot of the laws they list are exaggerated or made up, and most are not enforced. Remember, if you are charged with a crime, you need an attorney, not an internet meme.

One Florida law that has made many of these lists is one about doors opening outwards. The law states that theaters, operas and other entertainment facilities must have doors that open outwards. While at first glance this may seem like a dumb law, it exists prevent loss of life in the event of a fire or other emergency. After some noteworthy tragedies, many lawmakers took measures to ensure crowds can exit a building as soon as possible if need be. If doors opened inwards, a mass of people huddled around the door would prevent its opening and therefore trap everyone inside.
