15 Crazy Florida Laws: Sheriff’s Residence

“Commuter — one who spends his life in riding to and from his wife; A man who shaves and takes a train, and then rides back to shave again.”
-EB White

Do you think you might need a Miami criminal attorney to help you understand some of Florida’s crazy laws?

In response to some Florida laws getting bad press on the internet, in 2011, lawmakers passed HB7031, doing away with a number of the outdated Florida laws that have been called “crazy” and “dumb” by bloggers and in viral emails. Included in those removed from the books was a law dating back before cars were commonplace in Florida, requiring a sheriff to live no more than two miles of the county seat.

Not surprisingly, this law had gone unenforced for many years before it was finally struck down. We are pretty sure that no sheriffs in Florida have recently been charged for the crime of commuting!

While a law may have a good reason behind it, not all laws make sense in all situations. Criminal laws can be applied and enforced poorly, with serious consequences for the accused. If you are charged with a crime in Miami, contact our experienced defense attorneys. We will fight for your rights under Florida law.
