Marc Freeman of the Sun Sentinel writes, “Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Jack Schramm Cox won’t get to rule on whether Assistant Public Defender Elizabeth Ramsey is guilty of a contempt of court criminal charge. The Fourth District Court of Appeal in West Palm Beach on Wednesday ruled in favor of Ramsey’s request to have Cox disqualified from the misdemeanor case. A different judge will be tasked with handling the proceedings. In December, Cox accused Ramsey of violating a Nov. 30 order banning anyone from using transcripts of accused jailhouse snitch Frederick Cobia’s phone calls. Cobia is expected to testify about an alleged murder confession by Jamal Smith — Ramsey’s client. The appeals court later quashed Cox’s confidentiality order on the transcripts, but the contempt charge continued against Ramsey, 51. Cox said Ramsey on Dec. 11 filed a restricted court pleading against the judge’s orders. The pleading is testimony from Cobia under oath that references the jailhouse phone calls. Ramsey asked Cox to disqualify himself from the contempt case and he refused, setting up her appeal. The attorney wrote the ‘repeated accusations by Judge Cox of unethical and improper conduct against me leave me with a well-founded fear that I will not receive a fair trial from him.’ The State Attorney’s Office for Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties has been appointed by the governor to handle the prosecution against Ramsey. She’s being represented by defense attorney Donnie Murrell.”
